Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network, has launched Earn & Borrow, a stack that lets apps offer customers variable yield on stablecoins such as USDC and loans against their crypto. The yield and the loans come from third-party lending markets on Base, with Morpho and Aave named as examples. Base cites an average USD stablecoin yield of 4.45% across those markets, before incentives.

The rundown

  • What changed: Apps get a ready-made path from a customer’s deposit to on-chain lending: their chosen wallet holds the funds, optional vaults run by independent curators pick the markets and set risk limits, and protocols such as Morpho and Aave do the lending. Platforms can earn from stablecoin balances or from fees on loans.
  • Why it matters: This is distribution, not a new protocol. Brokers are already wiring on-chain yield into mainstream accounts, as with Interactive Brokers’ ether staking on Tuesday; Base is offering similar plumbing to any app built on its network. The basics of the lending side are in how DeFi lending works.
  • By the numbers: Morpho’s Base markets held about $4.47 billion in supplied assets not lent out, with $2.17 billion on loan; Aave v3 on Base showed $551 million and $363 million, per DefiLlama at 03:55 UTC. The 4.45% is a variable average, not a promised rate.
  • Where it breaks: Base’s own page lists smart-contract failure, oracle errors, liquidations, stablecoin depegs and loss of funds. Withdrawals depend on available liquidity, so a rush for the exit in a fully borrowed market means waiting. And Base says it “has commercial relationships with Morpho and Aave” while neither it nor Coinbase curates, manages or guarantees any vault, so the curator is the risk manager your app’s users are trusting.

A savings button is only as safe as the vault behind it. Read the Earn & Borrow page for Base’s terms and risk list.
