Bitcoin hourly candles from the 15 Oct PPI bounce through the 16 Oct US close, with Monday's $84,250 high, the $82,111 Deribit delivery, the $80,000 line and the $80,705 US-session low marked
The chip selloff pulled bitcoin to $80,705, but the $80,000 line held into the close and Monday’s $84,250 never came into play. (CryptoWatchDesk, data: Kraken; Deribit delivery)

Key points

  • Bitcoin fell from a Kraken UTC-day high of $82,826 to a low of $80,705.4 in the 17:00 UTC hour, as the Nasdaq Composite closed down about 2.2% and Brent crude rose about 3.5%.
  • The level that held was $80,000; Friday’s low came in roughly $1,000 above Thursday’s post-PPI wash at $79,709.
  • Monday’s $84,250 high is still the Brief’s Bearish flip line; a sustained break below $80,000 would put the $78,000 put strike on the 23 October book back in play.

The floor held. The ceiling didn’t move.

Bitcoin traded near $81,500 on Kraken at about 20:05 UTC, roughly 0.8% below its UTC open of $82,135.4 and about 1% above the afternoon low. Coinbase’s rolling 24-hour window showed a low of $80,693.69. Ether was near $2,405, down about 1.4% on the UTC day, while Solana slipped about 2% to $103.2 and XRP about 2.8% to $1.296. Friday’s US-open Market Read had bitcoin near $81,767 at 13:50 UTC; the leg lower came after that.

What drove the afternoon

The pressure came from equities, not from crypto. Yahoo Finance index data at the close showed the S&P 500 down about 1.1% at 7,659, the Nasdaq Composite down about 2.2% at 26,140 and the Dow off about 0.3%. The PHLX Semiconductor index lost about 3.8%. A chipmaker gauge was on course for an eighth straight decline, the longest losing run since 2008, Bloomberg reported during the session. AP said the Nasdaq was heading for its first weekly loss in five weeks.

Oil added a second weight. Brent futures were near $109.6 a barrel at the equity close, up about 3.5%, after touching $110 for the first time since May as Iran escalated attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, Yahoo Finance reported. The US 10-year Treasury yield held near 5.10%. The AI-trade unwind pulled bitcoin by the sleeve; it didn’t drag it through the floor.

It was the second test of the low $80,000s in two sessions, after Thursday’s PPI dip under $80,000 was bought within hours. The post-expiry Market Read had logged Friday’s Deribit delivery at $82,111.

Derivatives

Leverage stayed light rather than flushed. Deribit’s bitcoin perpetual open interest was about $855 million near 20:05 UTC, little changed from about $844 million at the US open, and funding on both Deribit’s perpetual and OKX’s BTC-USDT swap stayed slightly positive: no one paying up to be long, no rush to short.

Implied volatility did climb. Deribit’s DVOL index rose to about 38.4 in the 19:00 and 20:00 UTC hours, from about 36.2 at 10:00 UTC. In plain English, DVOL measures the 30-day volatility that options traders are pricing in, so a rising reading means they are paying more for protection.

The 23 October weekly book carried about 14,635 BTC of open interest at our read, with puts outnumbering calls about 1.25 to one. The largest strike is the $78,000 put at about 1,938 BTC, followed by the $70,000 put at about 1,115 BTC and the $80,000 put at about 963 BTC. The 30 October monthly is far larger (about 149,914 BTC) and leans to calls.

The levels

The level to watch is $80,000. A sustained break below $80,705 and then $80,000 would turn two defended lows into a failed floor and bring the $78,000 put line on the 23 October book back into view. On the upside, the $82,111 delivery print and the $82,826 day high are the first hurdles. A sustained reclaim of $84,250 remains the first serious challenge to the post-CPI/PPI downswing and to the Bearish Brief line.

The alternative read: Friday’s low came in nearly $1,000 above Thursday’s $79,709, with open interest flat and funding barely positive. That is a higher low built without fresh leverage, which some will read as dip demand rather than distribution. It still needs $84,250 before it overturns the Bearish call, and the latest ETF Desk showed spot bitcoin ETFs adding only $5.1 million on 15 October. Friday’s ETF flows follow once Farside’s row is complete.

Weekend liquidity is thinner, and Asia’s Saturday session trades with US equities shut. Stay nimble.

As of 20:05 UTC, BTC is trading near $81,500.
